Data.Matrix

Format: 7-inch vinyl record
Dimensions: 18.4 x 18.4mm
Year: 2022
The 7-inch vinyl record was designed as a concept for renowned Japanese electronic composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda, featuring his singles Data.Matrix (A-side) and Data.Index (B-side). These tracks are drawn from Ikeda's 2006 album Dataplex, a work that embodies the raw, elemental nature of sound through high frequencies, white noise, and rhythmic waves of bass, mirroring the sonic qualities generated by medical imaging devices. This intersection between Ikeda's sonic explorations and the technological sounds of medical equipment is further emphasized in the record's cover and label design, which incorporates actual MRI and X-ray contact sheets. The artwork for ‘Data.Matrix’ was particularly striking, featuring typography placed within the cranial walls, evoking the haunting imagery of a deteriorating brain.
